Word of the Day: Etymology

One of the core values I live by is Truth.

I have found language to be a valuable ally in aligning with truth. The words we think and speak are encoded with meaning. Observing the language we use can be helpful in the healing process.

Language and tone of voice give clues to what we’re embodying. Someone who is experiencing anger will choose different words and tone than someone experiencing joy. A person in a state of fear, consciously or unconsciously, will choose words that align with this emotional state (ie: “That’s terrible”: encoded with the root word “terror” and the emotion of fear)

I am called to understand and feel the truth of any given situation. In this quest, I often turn to etymology for clues to deeper truth within thoughts and experiences.

As this is an everyday part of my own healing process, I feel called to share some of what I have learned. With this intention, I am beginning a new series called “Word of the Day.” Here we will observe the true meaning of words.

I hope that this will be an invitation to observe the language we use. With awareness, we can begin to choose language that supports truth and healing.

If our intention is to explore etymology, it feels right to start there. What does etymology really mean?

etymology (noun) : the study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history.

This definition is pretty straightforward. Let’s take a cue from the definition and explore the history of the word etymology.

In the first part of etymology we see “etym.” This derives from the Greek word etumos meaning “true.” We also find the suffix “ology” which means “a subject of study or branch of knowledge.”

Putting these two together we see that the word etymology means something like “study of truth.” In Greek the word is “eutomlogia” and it means “study of words’ true meanings.”

Study of true meaning, etymology, is a wonderful tool for healing.

I hope you’ll continue to join me in exploring the true meanings of words and observing the language we use in both thoughts and spoken interaction. Together we can refine our communication to align with Truth.
