Word of the Day: Clarity
People often come to my healing practice with the intention of receiving clarity. At times in our lives we come across difficult decisions, periods of change, and circumstances that feel uncertain. In these times especially, we may pray for the ability to see and think clearly.
In order to invite clarity, it may be helpful to understand the true meaning of the word. Let’s explore the definition and etymology of the word clarity.
clarity (noun) :
the quality of being coherent and intelligible
the quality of transparency or purity
the quality of being clear
Early definitions of clarity are “brightness, radiance; glory, splendor.” Clarity is related to the Old French word clerte and Modern French clarté meaning “clarity, brightness.” These are from the Latin root claritas meaning “brightness, splendor” and “clearness.” Other Latin root words include clarare “make clear” and clarus “clear.” Clear is a relative of clarity.
When assessing the value of a diamond, each stone is graded for clarity. When determining the clarity of a diamond, a trained gemologist looks for internal and external characteristics called inclusions and blemishes. Inclusions and blemishes are caused when small crystals inside of the diamond grow under pressure and stress. Many of these characteristics are only visible under a microscope. A diamond has a higher clarity grade when it has less visible blemishes.
Like diamonds, we experience less clarity when we are under more pressure and stress. In defining clarity the following words come up: brightness, radiance, coherence, transparency, and purity. Stress feels like the opposite: darkness, confusion, fogginess, impurity, and uncertainty. Any activity that helps to lower stress will help to bring us more clarity. Rest, laughter, reiki, a healthy diet, movement, and time in nature are all great options for lowering stress.
Clarity is rooted in clearness. Clarity supports seeing, thinking, and speaking clearly. Clarity is honest transparency and purity.
If you find yourself feeling uncertain, stressed, or unclear — remember the true meaning of clarity. Anything that makes you feel brighter and more splendid will support the ability to express clearly.
